and surrounding areas
and surrounding areas is a series of embroidered works that mark specific moments in time. Each title records details of where I was, when the piece was made, and what was unfolding around me, creating a small frame of lived experience.
Inspired by the original purpose of barn quilts as landmarks that signaled place, community, and safety, these works become markers of memory rather than directions. They document what was here, right now, while leaving space for what surrounds each moment. Through familiar quilt patterns, hand embroidery, and nostalgic references, the work invites viewers to connect these fragments with memories of their own, filling in the surrounding areas with personal stories and places.
